This very old pile rug originates from the region of Ait Sgougou in southern Morocco, and is a striking example of the expressive weaving traditions found across the region. Its deep red ground creates a rich, almost saturated field, carrying an intricate composition of loosely defined geometric forms, angular motifs and vivid accents of colour.

Woven entirely from sheep’s wool, the rug has an exceptionally soft and tactile pile. Its age is evident not only in its appearance, but in the character of the wool itself, which has developed a remarkable softness and depth over time. The dense, handwoven surface gives the piece a substantial yet inviting quality, while the irregularities of the weave preserve the unmistakable presence of a handmade textile.

The graphic composition is particularly distinctive. Against the red ground, geometric forms appear to shift and overlap, interrupted by small touches of turquoise, yellow, white and blue. Along the edges, multicoloured woven details and loose fringes add further rhythm and reinforce the spontaneous quality of the design.

Measuring 148 × 196 cm, the rug has a strong presence while remaining intimate in scale.
