The Studio

We think the floor deserves the same attention as everything else in the room. Concrete gets specified down to the finish, and light modelled hour by hour around the furniture. Then, at the very end, the floor stares back at us, bare and, dare we say, boring.

We started FOLKS & CLANS to fix that.

Where this started

It began on a research trip through the Atlas Mountains. We went through villages where weaving runs generations deep, and where techniques are passed down for so long that nobody remembers whose hands started them.

Despite the beautiful craftsmanship, almost none of it ever made it into serious architecture. They are treated as decoration, sold as souvenirs, when they were clearly built for more. That gap didn’t sit right with us. We’ve spent the years since closing it.

What that looks like, day to day

We run three roles at once:

CONSULTANT: we join before a single textile is chosen, working through scale, layout, and light with your team.

CURATOR: we select heritage textiles for weight, texture, and pattern, based on your needs and vision.

STUDIO: we handle sourcing, freight, and delivery ourselves, door-to-site.

The Heritage

These pieces are hand-knotted in the High Atlas, one loom at a time, by people who’ve practised this longer than most firms have existed.

What follows from it is simple: no two pieces are identical, and the good ones don’t come in volume. That’s how the technique works, and it’s why our selection stays smaller than a typical supplier’s catalogue.

It’s also why our relationships with the weavers and ateliers we work with are direct and fair. It keeps our supply chain reliable enough for us to promise an architect in Milan a delivery date, and mean it. Good practice and good operations turned out to be the same thing.

Why do we call it the fifth wall

Every serious project already accounts for four walls, their finish, their light, and how they hold a room together. We think the floor belongs in that conversation. The ground a room stands on deserves attention and care. That’s the whole premise of Folks and Clans.
